For many, working from home or owning their own business is just a dream, something they hope to do one day, but not something they really believe is possible.

People often feel stuck in a job, which brings little or no satisfaction, and many stay at home moms wish they could add value to society or to their household, in addition to raising their children.

The biggest stumbling block preventing people from achieving this dream has little to do with money or circumstance. The individual’s mindset regarding money, risk-taking, financial security, and self-belief, as well as self-knowledge about their skills and passions, are generally the greatest stumbling blocks.

Of course, very few people are in a position to just leave their job, and give up their monthly pay cheque, and only extreme risk-takers (or the irresponsible) would even suggest doing something like this. But, this does not mean that one cannot go about creating the opportunity, and taking steps to achieve this dream.

Unfortunately, people are letting circumstance dominate their thoughts, and are not actively seeking ways to change their circumstances. They often look for immediate, short-term solutions and don’t spend time on the bigger picture.

Spending time on the bigger picture means firstly, knowing what you really want to do, and secondly acquiring the skills and knowledge to do this.

There are only a minute amount of jobs, even when self-employed, which entail spending 100% of your time doing something you are totally passionate about. One has to have some realistic expectations to start off with, but before we even reach the stage of managing expectations in this regard, we need to have some self awareness.

Undoubtedly, you can become self-employed doing something you’re not passionate about, and you can spend your day earning money in ways that you don’t particularly enjoy. It does have to be acknowledged that for some people, money is the first driver. The thought of money and what it represents creates passion to do almost anything! This does bring about an amount of personal satisfaction for some people, but what most people end up doing is chasing the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, without ever noticing the brilliance of the rainbow itself.

For the most part, people want to enjoy their lives, they’re seeking more than money, and they want to feel good about themselves and their daily activities.

It may be surprising to some, but many people don’t really know what they’re passionate about, and don’t really know what they actually enjoy doing. Instead, they just go about their daily business, letting circumstances dictate their day, with a dream of “one day, I’ll work for myself”.

If you desire self-employment, and want to do something more meaningful, you need to get past the first stumbling block – yourself!

The next article in this series will discuss this in more detail, but in the meantime, give some thought as to your personal passions, and what a day in your meaningful, fulfilling life would entail.

Dare to dream, but more importantly, dare to make that dream a reality!

Let’s help each other do just that – share your thoughts in the comments area.
