Marketing is often one of the most costly and time-consuming activities for any small business, and it’s no different for any Alberton small business owner.
The leaflets that take up space in my post box and adorn my metal sliding gate are testimony to the marketing attempts of many Alberton businesses. Unfortunately for the advertiser, (as well as the trees), most of these leaflets make their way into the dustbin – although since the advent of the sticky magnet, a small, very fortunate, percentage make their way to the fridge. The thing is how many calendars does a person really need on their fridge, and who really wants to be greeted by a badly taken picture of their local estate agent each morning?
Granted, leaflets can bring in a few more customers, and help get word out that your business exists. The reality though, is that when people are looking for a specific service at any point in time, they want access to that information right away. If my drain blocks, I am going to do one of two things –
- call 444 4040 – because those guys have used tens of thousands (maybe hundreds of thousands) of Rands to advertise - employing advertising agents to drill that number into our minds.
- Visit Google – type in “plumbers Alberton”.
More and more people are turning to the internet to find their service providers, yet, many small businesses are not keeping up with this trend. Alberton business really has a long way to go in this regard. The reasons for this are many, but often, this is because businesses feel that having a web presence is costly.
Having your own website, and email address, and then marketing that website can be costly, however, a web presence isn’t only about owning your own website. Having a web presence means that if someone is looking for the service you provide, that your details can be found on the internet.
The good news is that you don’t need a website for that. (Although a website is definitely a great way to market your business, there are alternative options for Alberton businesses).
Alberton businesses have the opportunity of having a free web presence, which translates into free advertising – permanently. Alberton Online provides a free one- page business listing service, which provides business owners with enough space to :
• provide an explanation of their services
• include their logo
• include a few relevant pictures of the products
• include their contact details
The internet has changed the way many people do things and I honestly believe that Alberton businesses are not yet taking full advantage of the resources available.
